Ok so what does any of this matter? After all some dev moaning that some other dev is being sneaky with rankings isn't exactly new is it? What does it really matter in the grand scheme of things? Well apparently it matters enough for Apple themselves to wade into the fray. Cupertino, either through that thread gaining some traction, or because they themselves were seeing something suspicious, decided to issue a warning to developers:
Once you build a great app, you want everyone to know about it. However, when you promote your app, you should avoid using services that advertise or guarantee top placement in App Store charts. Even if you are not personally engaged in manipulating App Store chart rankings or user reviews, employing services that do so on your behalf may result in the loss of your Apple Developer Program membership.
